The Maori arts board of Creative New Zealand, Te Waka Toi, has presented Ralph Hotere with Te Taumata, a "distinctive award to honour international and national achievement in arts and culture".
Board chairwoman Elizabeth Ellis says he has used his work to highlight important social and political themes.
