Police are bracing for a possible confrontation at the Waitangi flagstaff this afternoon.
Only one arrest has been made so far at this year's commemorations. A 20-year-old Palmerston North man was charged with disorderly conduct after throwing himself onto Don Brash's car yesterday.
Police commander Mike Rusbatch said there is traditionally trouble at the flagstaff on Waitangi afternoon, and there is a police presence on hand to ensure no damage is caused.
He says months of open dialogue and today's wet weather have defused any problems.
Meanwhile National leader Don Brash is praising the conduct of those involved in this year's Waitangi Day celebrations.
Yesterday saw one of the most peaceful build-ups to today's anniversary festivities.
Around 300 people attended a mid morning service in the grounds of the Upper Marae this morning.
The Prime Minister flew to Auckland for an engagement at noon.
It is 165 years since tribal groups from around the country came together to sign the Treaty, and Dr Brash says this year has been a credit to the organisers.
