Renowned Maori poet Hone Tuwhare will be buried today after a funeral at Kotahitanga Marae in Kaikohe.
Mr Tuwhare, 85, who died last week in Dunedin, was to be buried next to his mother in Wharepaepae.
He won national and international recognition for his work.
His 1964 collection No Ordinary Sun was the first book by a Maori poet published in English.
Hundreds had paid their respects since late Sunday evening when the body arrived from Dunedin after a farewell service in the South Island, The New Zealand Herald reported.
