A Rotorua Maori immersion school has won its battle to display a sign saying kura (Maori for school) on its school bus, rather than the English word, provided it is accompanied by an internationally recognised symbol.
The school, Te Kura Kaupapa Maori o Te Rotoiti, had been told by Land Transport New Zealand it was against regulations for a school bus not to have a sign saying "school".
Now LTNZ has agreed to consider "kura" as valid.
"[We] agreed in principle to the idea, and we now have to decide exactly what that sign will look like," spokesman Andy Knackstedt said.
