A Maori group's three-year occupation of land near Taupo's Acacia Bay has ended.
Taupo District Council and police removed three adults and several children from a Tupara Road building yesterday, the Dominion Post reported.
A 60-year-old woman was arrested and charged with breaching the peace, but the charges were subsequently dropped.
The building, previously used as clubrooms for the Taupo Rowing Club for 20 years, was removed from the site, 5km west of Taupo.
The group said the land and road were owned by Rauhotu hapu and were taken by the council in 1930s.
The hapu wanted the land returned and had planned a meeting to discuss future actions.
The council said the land and road were public property and had been illegally occupied.
A council spokesman said the two groups had been in talks for six months and eviction was a last resort.
