Sir Archie Taiaroa is in a serious condition in Waikato Hospital after suffering a stroke yesterday afternoon at his farm in Taumarunui.
One of Maoridom's most influential leaders from Whanganui, 73-year-old Sir Archie was flown to Hamilton at around 9pm last night.
Sir Archie is a member of Te Ohu Kaimoana, chairman of the Whanganui River Maori Trust and has served in local and regional politics.
Te Ohu Kaimoana chief executive Peter Douglas said many were in shock as Sir Archie led an active and healthy life.
Last year he was made a Knight Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit.
