Mourners are steadily flowing onto the Ohinemutu Marae in Rotorua to pay their respects to Sir Howard Morrison, who passed away on Thursday morning.
The Maori King, Tuheitia Paki, has been welcomed onto the meeting house.
Maori wardens clad in fluro vests are on duty to guide the busloads of people who are arriving. People in the community hall are busy providing tea, toast, cake and biscuits for waiting guests.
An estimated 10,000 people are expected on the marae during the tangi.
