The Labour Party is being warned that it is not time to put a deadline on treaty claims.
Prime Minister Helen Clark has promised that in a third term the Labour government would set a date by which all claims must be lodged.
Auckland University Maori Studies lecturer Margaret Mutu, who also campaigned against the foreshore legislation, says clearly there are still grievances which need to be sorted.
Margaret Mutu says the process should be closed down only when the tribunal has not received a claim for several years.
She says some Maori have put off lodging claims because they have little faith in the system.
