Labour is challenging National to come clean over its motives on the Foreshore and Seabed Act.
National is reportedly weighing up whether to support the Maori Party's private member's bill to overturn the legislation.
Acting Prime Minister Michael Cullen says if National supports a repeal of the Act, it will lead to the re-opening of the issue of private ownership by Maori, of the foreshore and seabed.
He says National must explain how it can consistently support the Maori Party's bid.
Dr Cullen claims National sometimes cannot see the national interest beyond its own short-term political gain.
