Almost half kohanga reo teachers smoke, says a study by the University of Otago, Wellington, of "role model" groups - such as teachers, health professionals and entertainers.
It found from Census data that about 10 per cent or less of people in these jobs smoked - against 22 per cent for all employed people.
But kohanga reo smokers numbered 45 per cent.
