Australia is treating New Zealanders like second-class citizens, the country’s Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil has admitted on TVNZ show Q+A.
But there are no plans to reform Australia’s 501 deportation policy, O’Neil says, even where individuals born in New Zealand have lived in Australia most of their lives.
Despite revelations today by the Herald that the man charged with the murder of the Rose Road Cottage Dairy was a 501 deportee, O’Neil is staunch.
She told Q+A host Jack Tame that the Australian government is concerned about how they are treating Kiwis in Australia, but says there has been “a real change in the tone and tenor” of their relationship with New Zealand since Australia’s change of government.
