KEY POINTS:
Organisers of a hikoi at Waitangi say the march was about letting Maori know their rights.
Up to 100 people marched peacefully to the flagpole on the upper marae this afternoon. A spokeswoman says Maori need to know the Navy's 21-gun salute acknowledges the sovereignty of the United Kingdom over the Maori nation.
"We received the 21 gun salute when the flag first came to Kororareka (Russell in the Bay of Islands) in 1834, so that flag is not the declaration flag it is the sovereign flag to Maoridom."
The spokeswoman says people need to stop being wooed by the words of politicians and start being true to themselves.
