KEY POINTS:
Treaty claimant groups whose traditional tribal area centres on the Gisborne District have signed an agreement to start negotiations, the Government said today.
Treaty Negotiations Minister Mark Burton signed the terms of negotiation with the Turanganui-a-Kiwa groups today.
He said the claims related primarily to the war between the Crown and Turanga Maori in the 1860s, the subsequent loss of land, the impact of Native Land Laws and detentions on Chatham Islands.
