KEY POINTS:
Northland-based Kelvin Davis had a blessed start to his political career - when he was confirmed as Labour's candidate for the Tai Tokerau seat the occasion was attended by Helen Clark.
She made the journey to Ngati Manu in Karetu rather than visiting Te Tii Marae for pre-Waitangi Day ceremonies.
On November 8, the incumbent Maori Party MP Hone Harawira held on to the seat, but at 29 on the list, Mr Davis was guaranteed a place in Parliament.
After 20 years as a teacher and principal, Mr Davis gave up his job as principal of Kaitaia Intermediate School to focus on getting into Parliament. His area of interest is no surprise - education, and in particular work with Maori communities.
Married to Moira Davis, he has three children aged between 8 and 13 - Kelly, Billie and Rewiti.
