Maori voters must now decide the future of an independent Maori political voice, says Maori Party co-leader Dr Pita Sharples.
The political newcomer believes the Maori Party has done all it can to provide a vehicle for Maori voters.
"Maori must now decide. If the Maori Party fails, then the future of an independent Maori voice will forever fall silent."
Dr Sharples also urged Maori voters to ignore Labour's "scare tactics" that a vote for his party was a vote for National.
"Maori have been panicked into believing they must support Labour to keep National out. That is not true. Maori must vote with their hearts, not through fear."
He said that addressing New Zealand's reliance on fossil fuel was an issue not treated seriously during the campaign.
A cross-party initiative to find fuel alternatives and address the country's dependence on oil was essential, he said.
With campaigning set to close tomorrow Dr Sharples said the campaign experience, his first, while draining, had been enlightening. On Sunday he and colleagues will thank supporters at Hoani Waititi marae in Henderson.
