An expert in Maori traditional instruments has been awarded $6000 by the Lilburn Trust for outstanding services to New Zealand music.
Richard Nunns is an authority on taonga puoru, or Maori traditional instruments, and his research has provided a wealth of information on the sounds, history and stories of these treasures, ensuring their preservation for future generations, a spokeswoman for the Lilburn Trust said.
Nunns has worked within a range of musical styles, including jazz and improvisation, and has performed a number of contemporary classical works, written specifically for him, with the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra and the New Zealand String Quartet.
