As the holiday season approaches, Horowhenua whānau are being reminded that it’s okay to ask for help, especially during a time that can be stressful for many.
Experts said reports of family harm typically rise during this period, and they expect 2024 to be no different.
Horowhenua Abuse Liaison Team (HALT) event coordinator Nicole Deans said financial pressures, the cost of living, unemployment, increased alcohol consumption, challenging family dynamics and decisions about holiday arrangements can all contribute to heightened stress. This, in turn, can lead to family harm, which can take many forms, including physical, sexual and psychological abuse.
Deans said everyone has the right to relationships that are equal, respectful, supportive and safe, and that family harm is not a private issue – it is a crime.
“We know family harm is a significant issue in Horowhenua but there is help available. Positive change is possible and we strongly encourage those experiencing family harm to reach out. We can connect you with incredible local people and organisations who are here to help.”
