Should a tsunami strike the west coast of the lower North Island, lines have been painted on the roads to mark out safety zones.
But do not be reassured when you reach them.
In particular, if you're fleeing a tsunami at Hokio or Waikawa Beach and come to the tsunami safety line on the road, keep fleeing - the actual safety point is further inland.
Tsunami safety lines recently painted by Horizons Regional Council on Hokio Beach Rd and Waikawa Beach Rd are several hundred metres closer to the coast than safety points marked on Horowhenua District Council maps.
