At the yards: First autumn calves fail to tempt buyers

With the first of the autumn-born calves arriving in any numbers, last weekend's rain did little to boost the entries in the cattle pens, nor did it tempt the regulars to increase their stock numbers at Rongotea, reported Darryl Harwood of NZ Farmers Livestock.

2 year Friesian - Hereford cross steers 460 kg made $2.17/kg.

2 year Friesian - Hereford cross heifers 292 kg made $2.29/kg, beef cross heifers 480 kg made $1.80/kg, Friesian heifers 376 kg made$1.50/kg and cross bred heifers 387 kg made $1.68/kg.

18 month Friesian - Hereford cross steers 302 kg made $2.31/kg.

18 month Friesian - Hereford cross heifers 327 kg made $2.14/kg.

Yearling Friesian - Hereford cross heifers 230 kg made $2.35/kg, beef cross heifers 180 kg - 275 kg made $1.75/kg - $2.28/kg and Friesian heifers 229 kg made $1.53/kg.

Weaner Friesian - Hereford cross bulls 82 kg made $355 and Red Devon cross bulls 150 kg - 277 kg made $310 - $500.

In the calf pens, Friesian bull calves made $105 - $205, Friesian - Hereford cross bull calves made $200 - $285 and Angus cross bull calves made $140.

Friesian - Hereford cross heifer calves made $250 - $265.
