Katie Harris, Social Issues Journalist for New Zealand’s Herald, regularly writes about sexual assault and workplace bullying and harassment, covering high-profile court cases and national media scandals.
Kia ora, I'm Katie and I cover social issues for the New Zealand Herald. I graduated from the University of Canterbury in late 2019 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Journalism, after completing a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Political Science, International Relations and Media and Communications. In October that year I started working at NZME as a radio reporter, taking a two-month break at the start of 2020 to complete an Asia New Zealand-funded internship at Agence France-Presse in Jakarta. Later that year I became a New Zealand Herald reporter. I regularly write about sexual assault, workplace bullying and harassment, and feel immensely honoured my interviewees feel safe to share their stories with me. During my time as a reporter I've covered high-profile court cases, national media scandals and launched a podcast that I love making each week, but my most rewarding moment as a journalist came when I helped a young man find his voice after sexual violence.
