Owners of the Paturoa Road sites, John Lenihan and Jane Greensmith, have released an open letter saying a threatened 500-year-old kauri tree can stay.
Auckland Council granted two resource consents for developers to build two residential homes on site. The consents granted approval for a 500-year-old kauri, a 300-year-old rimu and other trees to be removed.
Protester and kauri-sitter Michael Tavares, who has been camped out in the tree's branches since Monday, said he had spent a comfortable few nights in the kauri.
In a tweet this morning, Mr Tavares said he was "delighted" to hear the news."It's all happening this morning! we're delighted by initial reports!"He said once the tree was safe "I'm happy to come down".
New Lynn MP David Cunliffe said the Government's changes to the Resource Management Act - which removed protection for urban trees - was to blame.
