KEY POINTS:
A razor encased in plastic, cardboard and paper has been named as the worst offender for environmentally damaging packaging by Victoria's peak environment body.
The Gillette Fusion razor, made by Procter and Gamble, won Environment Victoria's Golden Dump award for its "gratuitous use of packaging", and the award for Excessive Use of Material.
The annual Dump (Dangerous and Useless Materials in Packaging) Awards expose the seven worst types of environmentally damaging packaging being sold on supermarket shelves.
Environment Victoria said the award judges found the razor's packaging demonstrated the unsustainable trend for encasing goods in far more packaging than required to protect, transport and market them.
The Likely to be Littered Award went to the Heinz Little Kids Mini Meals, due to the multiple types of plastic they contain, including a plastic eating utensil.
And the Going Backwards Award was won by Woolworths Apple Snacks for its "ludicrous packaging innovation that turns an apple into a grossly over-packaged fast food".
Environment Victoria Zero Waste manager Mark Doggett said the products made the environment pay dearly for excessive packaging.
The main winners are:
* Golden Dump Award: Gillette Fusion razor (Procter and Gamble).
* Excessive Use of Material: Gillette Fusion razor (Procter and Gamble).
* Poorly Designed for Recycling: Equal Cafe Sticks 60g (Merisant Manufacturing Australia).
