Gumboots are the chosen form of footwear for Springvale Garden Centre staff as they support I Am Hope's Gumboot Friday campaign, which aims to create greater awareness and raise funds for free youth counselling.
The initiative is led by New Zealander of the Year Michael King, with gumboots symbolising how suffering from mental health issues can feel like walking through mud.
Springvale Garden Centre general manager Gareth Carter believes gardeners will relate to improving mental health and wellbeing.
"For youth, getting out into the peaceful yet creative garden environment could well help them to feel there is hope around them and is a step to reaching out for professional help," he said.
Donations will be accepted through an in-store gumboot display today, with all funds received going to the I Am Hope campaign.
