KEY POINTS:
Auckland rail, bus and ferry passengers will be given thousands of low-energy lightbulbs and reusable bags to celebrate World Environment Day on Thursday.
They will also be invited to go in a draw for a year's free public transport, courtesy of the Auckland Regional Transport Authority.
And the Auckland City Council will treat any adults who turn up at its zoo on the day by foot, bicycle or public transport to half-price entry for $9.
The council is teaming with Waitakere City, the transport authority and Auckland Regional Council to blitz six transport hubs - Britomart, the Downtown Ferry Building, Henderson, Albany, Papakura and Manurewa - with giveaways to congratulate commuters on keeping their cars at home.
Public transport users will be given a choice between a free lightbulb or a reusable bag, to encourage them to make their lives more sustainable.
A Link bus will also offer breakfast snacks and free rides around central Auckland between 7.30am and 9.30am.
As council members help to spread the environmental cheer at Britomart, Auckland Mayor John Banks will help pupils of Pt Chevalier Primary School to plant more than a thousand native trees at Meola Reef Reserve.
The zoo will also offer free "sustainability" tours to Auckland businesses between tomorrow and Friday, and will open a three-day Art of Conservation exhibition and sale on Thursday night.
Businesses will be advised on the tours on how to "green up" their operations.
Proceeds from the sale of works by animal-keeper Justine Woosnam during the exhibition at the Old Elephant House will go towards the Amphibian Ark campaign at zoos across Australia and New Zealand to protect native frog populations.
