There has already been a deep look recently at how our education system is failing many kids in the New Zealand Herald's "The Primary Issue" series.
Crusading documentary maker and former teacher Bryan Bruce has his own politically and sociology-minded take in an one-off hour-long study which follows his previous Mind the Gap and Inside Child Poverty.
In World Class? Inside New Zealand Education Bruce ponders whether the New Zealand state education system, and old methods of learning are causing Kiwi kids to slip in many international rankings. "We can't teach our kids to deal with tomorrow by using yesterday's methods," he says.
As well as pointing out the problems and giving a recent history of NZ education politics including the advent of Tomorrow's Schools, Bruce proposes solutions via various overseas educators he encounters as the doco travels to Finland, China and the US.
"I think our public education system is broken and we need to have a national conversation about how to fix it," says Bruce. "If we don't do that today, we won't have a bright and prosperous economy tomorrow."
