Surprised by movie pariah
Mel Gibson
's recent expletive-filled, vile, vein-popping taped rants? Neither was actress
Winona Ryder
.
Ryder, soon to be seen in
Darren Aronofsky
's acclaimed dark ballerina thriller,
Black Swan
, has revealed she once had a nasty encounter with Gibson at a Hollywood party.
"Fifteen years ago, I was at one of those big Hollywood parties, and he was really drunk,"
Ryder told the January issue of GQ
.
"I was with my friend, who's gay. [Gibson] made a really horrible gay joke," she recalled.
"And somehow it came up that I was Jewish. He said something about 'oven dodgers,' but I didn't get it. I'd never heard that before. It was just this weird, weird moment."
She added: "I was like, 'He's anti-Semitic and he's homophobic.' No one believed me!"
I doubt she'll have that problem anymore.
So why didn't she pipe up sooner? Probably because Gibson was very much Hollywood's golden boy in the nineties, and enjoyed critical and commercial success with flicks such as
Braveheart
,
Forever Young
,
Maverick
and
Lethal Weapon 3
.
Ryder is no stranger to controversy herself. She was arrested on shoplifting charges in Beverly Hills, California in 2001, and accused of lifting $5,500 worth of clobber from a Saks Fifth Avenue department store in Beverly Hills.
The actress was sentenced to three years' probation, 480 hours of community service, walloped with a hefty fine and ordered to undergo drug counselling.
The stink made her persona non grata in Hollywood for a while, and she spent years on the sidelines looking in at her craft. But now she's back, playing a washed-up ballerina in
Black Swan
, starring
Natalie Portman
.
"I thought it was a cool parallel," Ryder explained in
GQ
magazine of her role.
"Being replaced by the young thing. I know that definitely happens in Hollywood. It's harder to find good roles, and suddenly there's new girls. I'm at that age I've been warned my whole life about."
On aging in Hollywood, she says, "It's hard to imagine a time where
Meryl Streep
wasn't the first choice for everything, but I was reading some article, and she said something like, 'Yeah, when I was around 38, 39, I turned to my husband and said, Should we just call it a day, or should we try to kick the can down the road?' It was so weird to me to think about movies without her in them. But a lot of great actresses have chosen that."
She also says she's worried about what might happen if she takes time out to have kids.
"If I wanted to have a family now, would I be able to come back to work in a couple of years?" she told the magazine.
Neither Gibson nor his representative has commented on Ryder's claims. When they do, let's hope it's not the standard, "F*!!%^H!!!!?******!"

Double the trouble
It's official:
Mariah Carey
and hubby
Nick Cannon
are expecting twins.
Cannon finally confirmed today what's been rumoured since Carey announced her pregnancy back in October.
"In order for my wife and I to have our life, we need to be up front and I need to be able to share things with you and be real," Cannon said on his radio show earlier today.
"I didn't even tell my wife I was gonna do this," he admitted. "I'm probably gonna get yelled at for not getting permission...We are having twins!"
But we're not the first to hear the news, folks. Cannon says President
Barack Obama
and First Lady
Michelle
heard it first, backstage at
2010 on Sunday.
"They, ironically enough, questioned my wife about, you know, 'So, what are you having, are you having twins?'" Cannon said.
"And at this point she hadn't told anybody anything because doctors advised us to keep it to ourselves until we get further along," he said.
"And because of the excitement, because of the emotion, she was overwhelmed [and] she shared with the President and First Lady that we are having twins."
Lohan stalker?
Rehabbing starlet
Lindsay Lohan
has been receiving harassing phone calls and text messages from unknown numbers while receiving treatment at the Betty Ford Centre.
that folks at the treatment facility are taking measures to protect Lohan after the slew of calls from an unidentified person.
Word is the anonymous caller has been making "disparaging statements about her recovery...and her family."
A source within Lohan's security team tells X17.com: "This guy has been harassing Lindsay for weeks now, and no one knows how he found out where she's living. None of the pictures shown by the media have listed the address.
"From now on, she will go nowhere without full-time security. We're trying to find out who this guy is because when we do, he'll be arrested. Lindsay is freaked out by this whole thing. We have no choice but to move her to a new location."
Eyes peeled, Lohan!
