Will Arrival be the alien movie of the year?

Aliens have invaded. Their ships have mysteriously appeared across the globe. And the fate of the world rests on the shoulders of ... Amy Adams.

In her new film Arrival, Adams plays Louise Banks, an expert linguist who is brought in by the US government to decipher an alien dialect and find out what they want before it's too late.

Also starring Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker, the sci-fi flick looks like it will be full of tense and suspenseful moments.

At one point, a team led by Banks enters one of the alien ships to make contact before the rest of the world starts trying to shoot the aliens down, possibly sparking a world war.

The film is directed by Denis Villeneuve, known for his work on Sicario and Prisoners. Villeneuve is also set to direct the upcoming Blade Runner sequel.

The script for the film was written Eric Heisserer, who wrote this year's horror-thriller Lights Out, and is based on the short story, Story of Your Life, authored by Ted Chiang.

Arrival is already being tipped as the alien movie of the year, with Vice saying it "looks like it will make up for a lousy year for sci-fi movies" and Esquire adding that the film "sounds promising".

Fingers crossed it's as good as the trailer makes it look.

Arrival is out in New Zealand on November 10.
