Hot on the heels of Teina Pora's conviction being quashed last week comes this six-part local documentary series, telling the stories of New Zealanders whose lives have been shattered after a wrongful conviction.
Each episode features one case, laying out the events leading up to the conviction and then picks apart what happened throughout the legal process that led to the wrong person being jailed. It looks at the lasting effects of these mistakes on each subject, along with their families and communities.
The first episode looks at the case of Krishla, Tania, and Lucy, who were all 14 or 15 years old when they were jailed for the aggravated robbery of a 16-year-old schoolgirl, which took place in 1999. The three girls were freed seven months later after a witness admitted she lied, and they were also found to have been nowhere near the attack.
Their conviction was overturned in 2001 and they received a sizeable financial compensation.
Tania's father played a key role in helping to clear the name of his daughter and her two friends.
