He is said to have accompanied her for much of the trip, which included dates across the US and Canada including Vancouver, Los Angeles and Washington.
However, others suggest he may have been feeling uncomfortable about some of his exposure on social media. In May Madonna posted one video of him doing a backflip wearing orange underwear with the caption 'Rocco's preferred profile #nosausage'. It was seen by her 4.7million followers on photo sharing app Instagram.
In an interview in August Madonna said Rocco did not want to perform on stage with her and would be working backstage on her tour as 'your mom is not cool' at his age.
The same month, on his birthday, she posted a photo of him with his mouth wide open while holding a pet dog. And in September the star gave her son a girly makeover and posted a picture of him with his hair in bunches while he appeared to cringe. The row between the pair became public on Wednesday when Madonna, 57, went to court in the US to try to force Rocco to return to America to spend Christmas with her.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Deborah Kaplan ruled he has to go back some time before the start of the new school year. This means that Rocco appears to have spent Christmas with Ritchie, 47, his model wife Jacqui Ainsley, 34, and their three children.
As Madonna and Ritchie work out the custody dispute, their son's passport is said to be being held for safekeeping in London by a lawyer who is representing him. Gossip website RadarOnline reported that Rocco 'ran away' from Madonna's tour when they stopped in London last month. A source told the website: 'Madonna and Rocco were having bad shouting matches. She'd be crying and yelling at him.'
The source added that when the tour stopped in London in the first week of December Rocco went to his father's house and has not seen Madonna since.
During the hearing in Manhattan on Tuesday Ritchie's lawyer Eric Buckley said Rocco had expressed 'clearly' that he did not want to return to New York. Justice Kaplan said if Rocco wanted to live with his father full-time he had to go to see his mother first.
Under the terms of the Madonna and Ritchie's divorce Rocco and David Banda, ten, their other adopted son, will live with Madonna. The couple split in 2008 after eight years together.
Representatives for Madonna and Ritchie were either unavailable or declined to comment.
