Smith warned the six-month gap between festivals meant they'd share little in common with their line-ups.
That hasn't stopped fans speculating on who might be included when the first line-up for Auckland City Limits is made on October 8.
Fans took to Facebook to suggest acts as far ranging as Noel Gallagher, New Order, Dead Weather, Pearl Jam and Blur - who controversially pulled out of the 2014 Big Day Out.
And there was this rather hopeful and almost impossibly wrong tweet from one Justin Bieber fan:
Expert opinion
Lydia Jenkin: We've got such a strong bunch of local artists at the moment, and I'd love to see them getting some good slots at ACL. Unknown Mortal Orchestra, The Phoenix Foundation, Carnivorous Plant Society, Stan Walker, Marlon Williams, Gin Wigmore - the list is long and they'd all do great festival sets. But in terms of an international dream line up, I'd love to see Pharrell Williams, Mark Ronson (maybe with a Bruno Mars cameo too), The National, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, James Blake, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Charles Bradley, and to really get the party jumping, it would be wonderful if they could convince New Orleans legends The Dirty Dozen Brass Band to come and march round Western Springs in all their glory.
Chris Schulz: I'm a massive hip-hop fan, and when I think of my favourite shows at Western Springs, one stands tall above the rest: Eminem. So I'd love to see someone of his size topping the bill. I'm thinking Dr Dre, or Drake, or even a Beyonce/Jay Z double billing. And heck, you can't count out Kanye West - he's busy releasing new songs in the build up to his next album. Bolster that with a few second tier rap acts - A$AP Rocky, Mac Miller, Kendrick Lamar, Joey Bada$$, Big Sean, Action Bronson and Raekwon have all released quality albums this year - and a couple of well travelled rock acts and I'm there, tie-dyed shirt and all.
Joanna Hunkin: As soon as I heard ACL was coming to Auckland, I crossed my fingers hoping some of the headline acts from Austin would make their way Downunder. The Strokes, Florence and the Machine, The Weeknd... Amazing! I would also love to see Alex James make good on his promise that Blur will return to New Zealand (after the Big Day Out debacle of 2013) and would pay good money to hear Macklemore and Ryan Lewis perform their latest epic Downtown live. Throw in Swedish dance pop legend Robyn and I would die happy.
Russell Baillie: Tom Jones. He is playing the Byron Bay Blues Festival the following weekend, so a mid to late afternoon slot would be a bit like Dolly Parton or Kenny Rodgers at Glastonbury. Or like Tom Jones at Western Springs. It would be unusual.
Blur. Ho ho ho. Ahem. Radiohead. Because I see a prominent NZ website ran a photo of them with an Auckland City Limits story yesterday. Only the photo was actually of them playing the Austin City Limits tv show. So far as I can tell, they have never played the festival. I'd like to see someone I would have otherwise had to drive to New Plymouth for Womad to see, seeing it's on the same weekend.
