The thing I find about dear Lana Del Rey, is she always confuses the heck out of me. The first single from her upcoming fourth album Honeymoon, was the title track, a sort of sad, swooning, string-heavy, orchestral type ballad that whispered of old Hollywood glamour and intrigue.
There was no super memorable hook (the chorus pretty much consisted of her chanting the word "honeymoon" over and over), but it was nice enough, and a seemingly understandable continuation of the tragic-romantic-tinged Ultraviolence.
Then she comes out with this - this confounding, mysterious, almost nonsensical, slightly bouncy trap influenced piece of electro hip-hop, that somehow manages to be completely obvious and predictable, but also a perfect encapsulation of the bizarre life Del Rey must lead.
We may not know what it's like to be hounded by paparazzi, or to want to blow up the helicopter that's circling your beach house, as in her zany video, but we still get it. We all know what it's like to "just want to get high by the beach", to leave all the bullshit to one side for an afternoon.
It's one of her catchiest, most modern-sounding tracks since Video Games, with the same pouty petulance that makes it feel more cynical than sad - maybe it's even supposed to sound like a parody.
