This weekend, cities and towns throughout New Zealand will be full of crazy folk pointing cameras at whatever helps them write, shoot and edit a short film in 48 hours. The annual 48 Hours: Furious Film-making competition has 500 entries so is set to be a memorable one. The winning shorts from each city will compete against Peter Jackson's wildcard picks during a two-hour C4 special and one film will become the national champ.

Skycity gets into the New Zealand Music Month swing of things with the first in its series of concerts of big local names at the casino's theatre. Tomorrow night it's the 21st century incarnation of Dragon featuring Mark Williams in the place of the late frontman Marc Hunter, while upcoming concerts feature Katchafire, Bic Runga, Nesian Mystik, Che Fu & The Crates, and Hollie Smith.

Iconic Kiwi performer Moana Maniapoto celebrates the release of her first album in six years at Galatos tonight. Moana and the Tribe, who brought out Wha this week, are giving a musical and multimedia show to commemorate the achievement. The band, critically acclaimed throughout the world, will be bolstered tonight by extra members and supported by talented songwriter Ruia and his band.

Roy Phillips, who has performed with Frank Sinatra, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Nina Simone, Sarah Vaughan and Sergio Mendes, plays Devonport's Masonic Tavern this Sunday evening. Phillips, organ player and singer, is famous for his involvement in The Peddlers, known for their hits On a Clear Day, By The Time I Get to Phoenix and the rest. Joining him on stage is special guest Jim Pugh, known for his work as trombonist in Steely Dan.

Scribe, who has been hanging out with Dizzee Rascal on a fancy MTV flight to Australia and working on songs with Wyclef Jean, invites us all to enjoy his live show in Auckland. Exploding out of the hardcore scene in the Eastern United States in 1997, The Dillinger Escape Plan offer an exhilarating and intriguing melding of hardcore, maths-rock and more. Separating themselves from your regular hardcore with wacky time signatures and sonic chaos, the band will thrill and confound the crowd next Wednesday at the Transmission Room. This is their first New Zealand visit, so it will be a raucous night out for fans.
