Find out what designer Emma Kaniuk is up to on the weekends.
1. Saturday pottering
I love to ease into the weekend with a sleep-in, followed by a long run and breakfast at the new local - Hare and the Turtle, who make some of the best scrambled eggs on toast around. Plus, instead of a table number you get a dinosaur. Then, the garden at home needs weeding and Im hanging out to play my new Veils record - so I'll likely be home and expecting friends to pop in for a tea or wine. The pop-in is a lost art, but I enthusiastically encourage it.
2. Saturday night lols
Aiming to keep everyone guessing, including ourselves, Saturday night is always up for grabs. Last weekend, my partner Eli and I went for a late night (and very brief!) swim at Onetangi beach, Waiheke Island - our first spring dip of the year. I spent much of my childhood summers on the island where I am happiest chasing the sun and splashing about in the ocean. Tonight were off with a bunch of friends to see Rose Matafeos Sassy Best Friend at Basement Theatre. Followed or preceded by cheap eats on K'Rd. In a few weeks I'll be at the Show Me Shorts short film festival launch at the Civic - the opening night lets you see all the winning films, a great night out.
3. Sunday work, work and other stuff
Sundays alternate between working and escaping the city. This one I'm working on some large vintage floral photo-murals which are quickly taking over our office in Britomart. I enjoy the peacefulness of diving into project work when no one else is around. To balance it out, I'll try to pop into the Auckland Art Gallery to see what I've not seen yet, scan the shelves at the Auckland Central Library and get some fresh air among the old gnarly pohutukawa trees in Albert Park.
4. Sunday night cramming
I'm really excited that one of my favourite organisations, Eat My Lunch, has just launched a dinner offering: a freshly made meal delivered to your door. For every dinner, they give a lunch to a Kiwi kid in need, too. Win, win. So this week's dinners are sorted! Then a mad dash to finish all the laundry, to-do lists, family WhatsApp (filled with puppies and cats), long-distance Skypes with friends and emails to set up the week.
