Weta Digital's work on Guardians of the Galaxy, War for the Planet of the Apes scores Oscar nods

The Weta Digital team are returning to the Oscars once again, this time with two nominations, both for visual effects.

Weta Digital's Dan Lemmon, Joe Letteri, Daniel Barrett and Joel Whist are nominated for their work on War For the Planet of the Apes.

Fellow Weta teammate Guy Williams is also nominated along with Christopher Townsend, Jonathan Fawkner and Dan Sudick for work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Dan Lemmon says Weta worked on a "big chunk" of Guardians, doing a lot of "crazy" environment-building work and lending their animation talents, particularly to the character of Rocket (a talking raccoon).

But the team's involvement on Apes was far beyond that, with some 500 people working on the film at Weta's Wellington base.

"Guardians, I want to say we did something like 500-600 shots and the other work was shared with facilities in London and Canada as well," says Lemmon.

"But Apes is definitely - that whole show was pretty much us. [Being nominated] is just a thrill every time, it's really exciting to have the work and team recognised by the world as some of the most cutting edge and fantastic work."

Weta Digital has won six visual effects Oscars in the past.

This year, they're up against the teams behind Kong: Skull Island, Blade Runner 2019 and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.
