Indie band the Kaiser Chiefs missed out on a memorable double on Sunday, going straight to number one in the UK album
charts, only to be dethroned from the singles chart's top spot, the Official UK Chart Company said.
An anti-Iraq war anthem recorded by Ugly Rumours -- a group named after the band in which Prime Minister Tony Blair used to perform as an Oxford student in the 1970s -- came in at 21 after being tipped for a top 10 place in the singles chart.
The song is a cover version of soul singer Edwin Starr's hit War, a protest against the war in Vietnam.
On its website (www.uglyrumours.com), the band features a photograph of a Blair lookalike and a spoof letter signed by "Tony Blair".
"I know I didn't give you a chance to vote on Britain going to war, so please think of this as a musical referendum on me before I leave office!" the letter says.
The website contains a link to the song's video that stars maverick anti-war politician George Galloway and Blair's sister-in-law Lauren Booth.
Leeds group Kaiser Chiefs' second long-player Yours Truly, Angry Mob was one of only two new entries in the top 10 of the album charts, with Westenra and Treasure coming in at nine.
Take That's Beautiful World album rose three to number two, though the reformed boy band had better luck in the singles chart, climbing nine places to take the number one spot.
US singer Gwen Stefani and The Sweet Escape, featuring hip-hop artist Akon, continued to yo-yo, rising four to three just ahead of two former number ones -- the Kaiser Chiefs' Ruby and Mika's Grace Kelly.
Fray's How To Save A Life was a non-mover at five, while R&B star Kelis slipped three to six with Lil Star.
American trio Gossip with Standing in the Way of Control -- the top 10's only new entry -- was at number seven, with Cascada's dance track Miracle zooming up from 88 to eight.
Hip hop artists Akon and Snoop Dogg's I Wanna Love You dropped five to nine, while Justin Timberlake's What Goes Around Comes Around closed out the top 10.
