Wellington gears up for One Direction

Wellington council says preparations have been made for the smooth running of One Direction's concert in the capital on Sunday.

The city is gearing up the for onslaught of hundreds of teenage girls, expected to swamp Courtenay Place to see the heartthrob boy band.

The UK based band will be playing at the St James Theatre on Sunday for the final leg of their New Zealand tour.

Their arrival to and from the venue is expected to turn Wellington's night life strip into a Mecca for screaming teenage girls.

Glenys Coughlan, Chief Executive of Positively Wellington Venues said, "One Direction has generated a lot of excitement on their tour. Access to the theatre is for ticket holders only, although there will be some seating for parents and carers in the foyer."

Coughlan said fans without tickets are advised not to turn up, as its unlikely they will get a glimpse of the band members.

Police will also be on standby to ensure there are no incidents.

"Measures are in place to ensure the event runs as smoothly and as safely as possible," said Coughlan.

Wellingtonians are advised to avoid Courtenay Place which is expected to be congested for most of Sunday.

The St James bus stop in Courtenay Place will be closed down and parking restrictions will come into effect from 6am Sunday.

Parents are advised to drop their children on Taranaki Road or Wakefield Street, and have been advised to determine drop off and pick up spots ahead of the concert.
