An elated Kimbra thanked Gotye and her musical hero Prince as she accepted her Grammy for record of the year yesterday.
The Hamilton-born singer said the win would not have been possible if Gotye had not asked her to sing with him on the duet.
She went on to thank Prince, who presented her with the award.
New Yorker reviewer Sasha Frere-Jones said Kimbra's emotion lightened up an evening filled with "sullen" artists.
"Gotye's collaborator Kimbra was visibly moved, a tonic on a stage that was full of people either unconvincingly cheerful or weirdly sullen," he said.
