Watch: Five teaser clips for Ghost in the Shell have popped up online

After months of hype - and controversy overcasting - the first look at Scarlett Johansson's Ghost in the Shell is here.

The film was partially filmed in Wellington earlier this year and features Kiwis Fa'amoana and Matthias Luafutu (rapper Scribe's father and brother), alongside Johansson.

Ghost in the Shell - directed by Rupert Sanders - follows Major Motoko Kusanagi, a cyborg who serves in counter-cyberterrorist group Public Security Section 9.

It's set in the near future in Japan and is based on the Manga series of the same name.

For that reason, there was controversy when Scarlett Johansson was cast as the Major over an Asian actor, given the original series' roots in Japanese culture. There were even petitions online to have her replaced.

Still, Johansson stayed in place and features in a newly released series of 10-second clips the studio posted to Twitter.

Sadly, the clips reveal basically nothing. A bit of intrigue, a bit of action, the kind of overall look and vibe - but that's about it. See for yourself:

Ghost in the Shell is due to hit cinemas in March, 2017.
