TV3 sports presenter Hamish McKay quits after 10 years

Hamish McKay is leaving TV3 after nearly 10 years reading the sports news.

After nearly a decade of reading the sports news on TV3, Hamish McKay has announced he is leaving the network.

McKay will read his final sports bulletin on Sunday night.

"I depart in my 10th year in the sports anchor chair at TV3... A bloody good innings that started nearly quarter of a century ago with an old brick cellphone covering Saturday afternoon sport in the Manawatu," McKay told Newshub.

He counted both the 2007 and 2011 Rugby World Cups as career highlights.

Acting Chief News Officer Richard Sutherland said McKay was one of the country's leading sports broadcasters.

"Hamish has earned the trust and respect not just of the country's sporting community, but more importantly that of our audience, through hard work, an encyclopaedic sporting knowledge, and the occasional controversial but honestly held opinion," Sutherland told Newshub.

McKay will also go down in New Zealand pop culture history for being the target of Pulp Sport's McKay-ver skit for several years.

The segment saw Bill and Ben repeatedly prank the sports presenter, including covering his car in Post-It notes, filling his office with sheep and and plastering his face on a billboard for erectile dysfunction outside the TV3 offices.
