The Te Araroa Trail was officially opened in 2011 and, at 3000km long, is one of the longest walks in the world. In this new documentary series, Kiwi comedian and entertainer Pio Terei takes to the trail to check out our landscape, tell us some stories, and meet as many people as possible along the way who have a tale to tell of their own.
The seven-part series traverses familiar tourist terrain and some very remote spots, with Terei chatting to everyone from stuntmen and eel catchers, to "knitting ninjas" and conservationists, who share their passions and pastimes.
The first episode starts at 90 Mile Beach, where Terei and his crew trek to Ahipara and meet an Australian knife-maker - who carves him a special walking stick for the series - before encountering a a 10-year-old fishing expert and a colourful Dalmatian dance troupe. From there the series takes him to the Bay of Islands, Waikato, Pakiri, Whanganui, Kapiti, and finishes up in Bluff.
