Catherine Cawood, played by veteran British actress Sarah Lancashire, is a strong-willed police sergeant battling the drug-laden crime scene of the Yorkshire valleys in this six-part drama.
Her no-nonsense-do-it-yourself-and-make-the-best-of-things approach is rattled when she hears that Tommy Lee Royce, the man she believes is responsible for the brutal assault that drove her daughter to suicide, has been released from prison - he was put behind bars for drug dealing, not for the assault.
Convinced Tommy is dangerous, she contemplates how to catch him or stop him before he hurts someone else, while also juggling the needs of her recovering drug-addict sister, her wayward young grandson, her ex-husband who's losing his job, and a community slowly going off the rails.
Like quiet middle-class accountant Kevin Weatherill, who feels unappreciated and underpaid at work, and seething with rage at his boss, cooks up a half-witted kidnap plot to get his attention, which spirals out of control when local criminals get involved.
The BBC series received high praise in the UK, and has been renewed for a second season.
