GOLDEN GLOBES 2007
For hot tips on who might be this year's potential Oscar winners tune into the 64th Annual Golden Globe Awards and watch as the stars come out to play. Plus, you can also check out Live From the Red Carpet on the E Channel from 11am.
A measure of the quality of the new-season TV shows Ugly Betty and Heroes is that they are immediately up for awards at the Golden Globes. Ugly Betty has a nomination in the comedy or musical category but faces heavyweight opposition from Desperate Housewives, Entourage, The Office and Weeds. Ugly Betty's star, America Ferrera, also has a nomination - for best actress in a comedy series - with competition from Marcia Cross and Felicity Huffman (Desperate Housewives), Julia Louis Dreyfus (The New Adventures of Old Christine) and Mary-Louise Parker (Weeds).
Heroes received a nod for best drama series but will also have a tough time against 24, Big Love, Grey's Anatomy and Lost. Masi Oka, who plays a rebellious time-travelling geek in Heroes, is up for a best supporting actor award. In the other big categories, Babel, Bobby, The Departed, Little Children and The Queen are the contenders for best motion picture (drama), while the best actress in that category is between Penelope Cruz (Volver), awards magnet Judi Dench (Notes on a Scandal), Maggie Gyllenhaal (Sherrybaby), Helen Mirren (The Queen) and Kate Winslet (Little Children).
Leonardo DiCaprio has shortened his odds in the best actor category with two nominations (Blood Diamond and The Departed) and is up against Peter O'Toole (Venus), Will Smith (The Pursuit of Happyness) and Forest Whittaker (The Last King of Scotland). Best actress in a television drama series is between Patricia Arquette (Medium), perennial favourite Edie Falco (The Sopranos), Evangeline Lilly (Lost), Ellen Pompeo (Grey's Anatomy) and Kyra Sedgwick (The Closer). For the blokes, it's a contest between Patrick Dempsey (Grey's Anatomy), Michael C. Hall (Dexter), Hugh Laurie (House), Bill Paxton (Big Love) and Kiefer Sutherland (24).

MILES FROM HOME
Herald rating: * * *
Richard Gere and Kevin Anderson play brothers who burn their farm down after the bank decides to foreclose on their mortgage. Good drama, hampered by the notion that the formerly honest brothers would turn to a life of crime, robbing banks and waving guns at folk. Directed by Gary Sinise. (1988)
