Scottish band Mogwai are nearing their 20th anniversary as masters of moody guitar grinds and atmospheric post-rock. They'll be celebrating that milestone with two shows in Auckland next year.
The five-piece will perform at Wellington's James Cabaret on Friday, March 6, and Auckland's Powerstation on Saturday, March 7.
Their brand of mostly instrumental shoegazing rock has earned them comparisons to My Bloody Valentine, Sonic Youth and New Zealand's own Jakob (read more about them on page eight), and Mogwai have delivered the goods over eight albums now.
That includes this year's Rave Tapes, a record that Q magazine called "a streamlined, seething version of themselves" while Rolling Stone magazine quipping: "Many were born to rock; Mogwai were born to score." It's a funny thing to say - anyone who has seen French drama show Les Revenants will know Mogwai helped give that supernatural show a distinct feeling of unease, thanks to their spooky soundscapes. They were captured on the soundtrack of the same name released in 2013.
They're also known for creating quite a racket at their live shows, so expect some blisteringly noisy action when they perform in Auckland. Tickets go on sale on November 11.
