Bay Venues commercial manager Ervin McSweeney said it was significant that the world's greatest beach band would perform in Mount Maunganui, which was often voted New Zealand's best beach location.
It would not be the first time the Beach Boys had pulled the crowds at Mount Maunganui. They last performed in the Bay alongside Chicago in 2004. This time they would be performing throughout the entire show.
The group was founded in Hawthorne, California, in 1961 and originally comprised the three teenage Wilson brothers: Brian, Carl and Dennis, their cousin Mike Love, and school friend Al Jardine.
In 1962, neighbour David Marks joined the group for their first wave of hits with Capitol Records, leaving in late 1963.
In 1965, Bruce Johnston joined the band when Brian Wilson retired from touring to focus on writing and producing for the group.
The Beach Boys signed with Capitol Records in July 1962 and released their first album, Surfin' Safari, that same year. The album spent 37 weeks on the Billboard chart, launching the young group into international stardom.
The Beach Boys continue to hold Billboard/Nielsen SoundScan's record as the top-selling American band for albums and singles, and they are also the American group with the most Billboard Top 40 chart hits at 36.
To mark their 50th anniversary as a band, Beach Boys Brian Wilson, Mike Love, Al Jardine, Bruce Johnston, and David Marks got back together to record a new album, That's Why God Made The Radio in 2012.
The other two original members of the band, Carl and Dennis Wilson, passed away in 1998 and 1983 respectively.
