They came, they sang, they conquered the charts, spat the dummy and then scuttled off into obscurity. Only to return with a vengeance - whether we liked it or not.
Case in point: The Spice Girls.
Not content with their 2007 resurrection, the British pop girl band, comprising the collective talents of Victoria Beckham, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, and Geri Halliwell, is reportedly considering another reunion tour in 2010.
Which made us wonder: How many bad band reunions have we endured over the years?
Here's a few we can think of:
2008 - The Spice Girls
The feisty ambassadors of "Girl Power" crash-landed onto the charts in 1996 with debut single Wannabe. The song hit number one in 31 countries and propelled the quintet into another stratosphere. But it all went sour on 31 May 1998 when Halliwell left the nest and embarked on a solo career. Despite churning out the optimistically-titled Forever album in 1999, the rot had already set in. In 2001 they announced they would be going their separate ways. But the split was short-lived. They re-appeared in 2007 with a Return of the Spice Girls tour. But while the money-spinning tour was a commercial success, the Girls have yet to prove they can still give us new bangs for our bail-out bucks.
2008 - Guns N' Roses
The rock band darlings of the mid-eighties, Guns N' Roses, led by frontman and co-founder Axl Rose, has gone through numerous incarnations and line-up changes since they debuted with 1987's chart-storming album Appetite for Destruction. They later had a bit of an identity crisis with the genesis of two ambitious, and some might say overblown, Use Your Illusion albums. And that was the beginning of their dysfunction. They then toured their merry way around the world in 2007 with only one original member in the line-up, and sold out Auckland's Vector Arena...somehow
2004 - INXS
You've got to hand it to Australian rock band INXS for trying. Despite the death of frontman Michael Hutchence in 1997, the band soldiered on and announced plans to re-boot seven years later with a brand new singer - courtesy of a reality TV-based show culminating in the selection of their new warbler, Canadian J. D. Fortune. He left the band in 2006, leaving them without a frontman. The band is believed to be recording a new project as we speak - without a lead singer. Go figure.
1994 - The Beatles
The three remaining members, McCartney, Harrison and Starr, banded together for the Anthology project in 1994 - based on work begun in the late 60s. The trio basically added new instrumental and vocal parts to two demo songs recorded by the late John Lennon. Electric Light Orchestra producer Jeff Lynne then doctored with the tracks by covering the music in his special bland brand of middle-of-the-road studio treacle. The moral of the story: If it sounds bad on paper...
1996 - Sex Pistols
English punk rock band the Sex Pistols regrouped in 1996 for The Filthy Lucre Tour - a 78-date world tour that lasted for almost six months. They even brought back original bassist Glen Matlock to replace deceased star Sid Vicious. But despite rolling out the old hits from their back catalogue and giving fans a trip down memory lane, the reunion never quite hit the spot and smacked of money for old rope.
