KEY POINTS:
Actress Katie Holmes today joined more than 39,000 other runners competing in the New York marathon.
With husband Tom Cruise and daughter Suri, 1, cheering her on at the finish line, Holmes completed the 42.1km (26.2 mile) run in 5 hours, 29 minutes and 58 seconds. Cruise's mother and Holmes' parents were also on hand to see her complete the marathon.
Holmes, 28, has previously credited running with helping her shift the weight she gained while pregnant with Suri.
"I have always loved to run," Holmes told Harper's Bazaar in March. "It has helped me lose the extra baby weight."
British world record-holder Paula Radcliffe won the women's event, finishing in 2 hours 23 minutes and 9 seconds.
The men's event was won by Kenyan Martin Lel, in 2 hours 9 minutes and 3 seconds.
