"It is not unusual for parents to find kids in their 20s and 30s back living in the family house with spouses or partners because they can't afford a place of their own," Greg Heathcote, executive producer of Our First Home, told the Herald on Sunday.
The identities of the families involved are being kept under wraps. They come from Tauranga, Auckland and north of Auckland.
In the past two weeks, the three families of four have been touring Auckland suburbs to tie up deals. They will then have 10 weeks to renovate before selling.
"Real estate experts have been advising of up-and-coming areas. Contestants are trying to secure the worst houses in the best streets," Heathcote explained.
"There is no restriction on budgets but you don't get much for under $400,000 these days in Auckland."
