Thrones author says fans have guessed the ending

It is one of the most highly anticipated endings in the history of both television and fantasy fiction.

And now George RR Martin says fans of Game Of Thrones have already guessed the final conclusion - who lives and who dies - for the book series that has been made into the popular HBO show.

In a new interview the 65-year-old author admits he considered changing the course and direction of his narrative after discovering many of his readers had accurately predicted his final plot points.

According to The Telegraph, Martin gave a presentation at the Edinburgh International Literary Festival where he talked about his writing process for the final two books.

"I've wrestled with this issue [fan speculation online regarding the ending to his series], because I do want to surprise my readers," he explained.

Adding: "I hate predictable fiction as a reader, I don't want to write predictable fiction. I want to surprise and delight my reader and take them in directions they didn't see coming...

"At least one or two readers had put together the extremely subtle and obscure clues that I'd planted in the books and came to the right solution.

"So what do I do then? Do I change it?" He asked rhetorically. "I wrestled with that issue, and I came to the conclusion that changing it would be a disaster, because the clues were there.

"You can't do that, so I'm just going to go ahead. Some of my readers who don't read the boards, which thankfully there are hundreds of thousands of them, will still be surprised and other readers will say: 'see, I said that four years ago, I'm smarter than you guys'."

The book series is set to publish two more instalments, including The Winds Of Winter and A Dream Of Spring - neither of which has a release date.

Season five of the HBO series will air in April, 2015.
