KEY POINTS:
The Crucible
Arthur Miller's classic The Crucible takes on an unnerving resonance in this age of hysteria and fear generated by the threat of terrorism. It centres around some young girls from a closed religious sect in Salem who, when they are discovered experimenting with devil-worship, try to save themselves by denouncing neighbours as Satanists. Written in 1952 as a response to the McCarthy anti-communist trials, the Pulitzer Prize-winning play has never dated, offering a stark warning about the dangers of irrational belief.
Directed by Colin McColl, with an ensemble cast of 20, including David Aston, Elizabeth McRae, George Henare, Ray Henwood, Raymond Hawthorne, Rima Te Wiata and Roy Ward.
