The xx have based their new album on "sad" dance music.
The British group are returning with their second record, Coexist, in September and wanted to capture the same energy as on their favourite up tempo dance tracks which have melancholy lyrics.
Singer Romy Madley Croft said: "Something Oliver [Sim, bassist] and I have always been into is dance songs where the lyrics are really devastating, but you've got the whole room of people dancing and having the best time ever. And if you stopped and listened, you'd think, 'This is so sad.' That's come out in a few of the songs."
The pair - who are joined in the band by Jamie Smith - have also swapped song writing duties, with Oliver taking a more of a personal role in the group, while Romy has been more observational.
Oliver added to NME magazine: "Romy's writing on the last record was more about real experience. But considering they were love songs we wrote at 15 or 16, I was writing more from expectations of how I wanted things to be.
